Training a dog is hard work. If you’re entering your golden years and want a new companion, the idea of bringing a puppy home might be overwhelming. Adopting a dog from a shelter comes with its own unique challenges, some of which you may not be prepared to deal with right now.
But what if you could bring home a fully trained Labrador Retriever puppy? At Snowy Pines White Labs, we offer three levels of training for our White Lab puppies. The highest level of training makes your White Lab eligible for the Canine Good Citizen certification from the American Kennel Club. Better yet, these fully trained Labrador puppies are completely potty trained!
Regardless of which training level you pick, our goal is for your White Lab puppy to fit right in with your home life, no matter your age.
So let’s explore the benefits of having a Labrador when you’re in your retirement years.
Labrador Retrievers are some of the gentlest, most trainable dogs around, which makes them an excellent choice for seniors. We may be biased, but we think Labrador Retrievers are the best dog breed for seniors!
Here’s why.
If you’ve ever met a Labrador Retriever, you know these dogs love to move.
And while advancing age might slow you down a little bit, continuing to move your body can help you stave off all sorts of ailments. Going for a brisk walk each day can help relieve joint pain, strengthen your immune system, and boost your mood. It can even help lower your risk of certain cancers.
Walking each day is so important that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that adults over the age of 65 do 150 minutes of brisk walking each week.
Guess who can help you meet those recommendations?
Your Labrador Retriever, that’s who. Fully trained Labradors are especially helpful walking companions because they will not yank or tug on the leash.
This is important because Labs are on the heavier end of the canine spectrum. They can weigh anywhere from 50 to 90 pounds, with English Labradors on the lower end of the scale and American Labs on the higher end.
That’s why a fully trained Labrador puppy can be a safer choice than an untrained one.

Owning a Labrador provides seniors with something that can be easy to lose as we age: companionship. Becoming a dog parent means you have someone to care for, talk to, and cuddle with. Your Lab will listen to you without judgment and be fiercely loyal to you, because that’s part of a Lab’s nature.
Studies have even shown that people who own dogs are more likely to survive adverse health events like heart attacks and strokes. They’re also more likely to enjoy a longer and happier life. Loving on your dog can elevate your oxytocin, dopamine, and serotonin levels, helping you feel content and happy whenever you’re with your pet.
Your Lab can also help you reach out and make new connections with other people. All you have to do is take your dog to a dog park, doggy café, or doggy bar, and you’ll both find new friends in no time!
Now that we’ve established the benefits of having a Labrador to love and care for, let’s explore the benefits of a trained Labrador.
When you bring home a fully trained Labrador, you won’t need to stress about potty training your new puppy (PHD training level and above). Potty training can be stressful for even the most youthful and energetic of people. It inevitably involves scrubbing lots of potty accidents out of your carpets or off your floors.
It can also mean getting up in the middle of the night to let your dog out or hope you don’t have too many pee puddles to wipe up in the morning!
A potty trained Labrador puppy will let you know when she needs to go outside.
The older we get, the less fun—and safe!—it is to deal with a dog who tugs on her leash. Once this behavior is learned, it’s incredibly challenging for your dog to unlearn it. If you bring home a trained Labrador puppy, you won’t have to worry about this challenge.
You’ll be able to leash your Lab up for a daily walk and enjoy a brisk dose of exercise together.
Labrador Retrievers are friendly to begin with. But fully trained Labradors who are AKC Canine Good Citizens have also been taught how to interact politely with dogs and people they don’t know.
The stress of having a high-conflict dog won’t be an issue for you with a fully trained Labrador. You’ll be able to enjoy doggy playdates, dog parks, and nature walks without worrying that Fido will lose his cool.
You can bring home a fully trained White Labrador Retriever for seniors at Snowy Pines White Labs. We recommend choosing a dog with our highest level of training, the Wagology Doctorate Program. Your White Lab puppy will receive 600 hours of training and lifestyle skills, along with her AKC Canine Good Citizen certification. And of course, she’ll be potty trained!
If you live with a disability, we also train some of our White Labs and English Cream Golden Retrievers as service dogs. Our fully trained service dogs can perform specific tasks, acting as a partner to help you navigate life.
You’re sure to love any Labrador Retriever who walks through your door. A trained Labrador will give you extra calm, enjoyment, and peace of mind. Reach out to our team today to learn more about our fully trained White Labs!
